MY STORY
My name is Inés Sánchez, sports and artistic clothing designer.My first contact with sport was when I was 6 years old, when my parents signed me up for rhythmic gymnastics. It is a tough but highly rewarding sport. I also went to drawing and painting classes, where I realised that creativity was my thing, I loved it.
I am also mother to three teenagers who are dedicated to competitive sports, my eldest daughter Paula is a triathlete, my daughter Alejandra is a high-performance athlete in trampoline jumping and is part of the Spanish National team, and my youngest Jimena dedicates a large part of her time to artistic swimming at national level. As a mother I know perfectly well what an athlete needs and what moms expect from their sports clothing.
I am a synchronized swimming referee judge and I know what is most valued within an exercise routine.
My story began while I was waiting for my daughters to come out of their daily swimming practice. I had been director of HR in a transport company for 15 years, but every opportunity for change comes from discovering other personal needs.
In my daughters' club we had a lot of difficulties finding a person who would make high-quality competition swimsuits, carefully made and who would finish the projects on time.hey always delivered our orders one or two days before the competition, with no time to make any modifications or adjustments, which were unfortunately always necessary.
Considering this problem and the fact that I spent 3 hours a day sat on the pool bleachers waiting for my daughters to finish their practice (my house was far so it wasn’t worth it to drive back and come pick them up later),
lejos no me compensaba trasladarme a casa.
One day I said to myself: "I can't waste more time doing nothing", so I took my phone and looked for a way to learn how to make elastic clothing. That way I could not only occupy my free time, but also solve the problem that we moms had with competition clothes. And luckily, very close to the pool was one of the best centres in Madrid for design and clothing training.I learned for several years, and little by little I began to make swimsuits for our cluband soon for other clubsI realized that this was my passion, la The fusion of sport and creativityI decided to quit my job and pursue what made me happy.
AKENA and my PASSION are born from this story.

- You feel stressed during the manufacturing process because you don’t know if they’re working on it or not. The day of the competition is approaching, and you still don’t know when your order will be ready.
- When it finally arrives, you put it on, look in the mirror and your heart sinks. It doesn’t fit right. The back is too loose. The rubber bands are too tight. The colours aren’t exactly what you expected.
- You go to your competition feeling sad, nervous, uncomfortable. You feel like this garment doesn’t represent your personality. You look boring, stale, you lack style and your mood is automatically ruined.
My job is to make sure those fears fade away. I’m looking forward to helping you. You just have to keep dreaming and enjoy the process.

You look at yourself, you love yourself and you’re automatically in a good mood. You are happy, you feel safe and confident. You feel capable of facing the stress and pressure of the competition, you put out all your energy and come out with your head held up high.

That’s the big question I know you’re asking yourself at this point. If you let me join you in your sports journey, I commit to:
- Scheduling a meeting (face-to-face, zoom or on the phone) so that you can tell me your ideas. I’ll get to know your personality and taste, and I’ll be able to give you my advice on the style and colours that best suit you, your team, the choreography, and the music you chose for your routine. Let’s make sure I know what you’re looking for.
- Sending you a proposal and the budget (with and without decorations) and the hand-drawn design to see if it matches your expectations. We can go through 3 rounds of revisions and modifications. Once adjusted, we’ll send you the final digital design.
- Sending you pictures during the whole process to keep you updated. I know you’ll love to see pictures of your garment to see how it’s made step by step. You’ll learn how it’s stamped, cut, sewn and decorated.
- Delivering your order on the scheduled date to avoid feeling anxious before your competition (both you and me).

At Akena we control production by making all our garments to order. This means that we only produce what we have previously sold, reducing energy consumption and, therefore, reducing CO2 and the greenhouse effect.
